MGA, in collaboration with Kamehameha Schools, has been responsible for the Concept Design and Development for this exciting new retail destination for the Kāhala community. The project consolidates (6) parcels of existing retail and commercial properties into a new earth-friendly neighborhood destination.
Working closely with Kamehameha Schools Hookahua Cultural Services, MGA incorporated the history of the site and the art and craft of the culture within this area, helping to set precedence for the look, function and activities for the new marketplace.
The timeless, one-of-a-kind design draws its inspiration directly from the site’s rich cultural history and responds to the landowner’s dual mission to educate and inspire environmental stewardship and to bring a new venue for commercial engagement.
Hawaiian cultural history, Placekeeping, environmental sustainability and the use of native botanical species are just a few everyday practices that are exemplified within the design of Kū‘ono Marketplace at Kāhala buildings and site.
“Spouting Water” is a recurring theme which remind visitors of the rich Hawaiian stories of this site, exemplified by the sites multiple water features and other imagery.
The Story
Freshwater springs were created by Kāne and Kanaloa, two Hawaiian Gods that traveled the islands. Kāne revealed the spring with his ‘ō‘ō. These springs offered much-needed refreshment to travelers. Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli became very thirsty while traveling, so he asked an elderly couple in the area if there was any water nearby. This elderly couple happened to be the descendants of the caretakers of the spring. They held the knowledge of the location of the spring so that when the Ali‘i traveled through they would be able to supply them with cool, refreshing water. The spring was hidden under a large pōhaku covered by pōhuehue vines.
The relaxed, friendly environment of the design is aimed at promoting wellness, healthy lifestyle and an oasis in a prominent urban environment along the main Waialae Avenue thoroughfare.
